    Still Bumming Around
    Posted in Career

So much for being busy and running around, haha. I finally quit my “freelance” web design job after two months. They didn’t state down the proper conditions upon which they were hiring me. Instead of it being a proper freelance project, I was required to be there almost everyday, and I was supposedly being paid monthly. It was ridiculous. Not only that, while my friend and her partner were getting a combined amount of S$2.5k per month for designing the company’s collaterals, I am only getting S$800 per month for modifying and coding the website as well as providing various back end support. I had to try so hard to refrain from yelling that I was not a web programmer or web administrator, I was the web designer.

It’s very unfair to me, and I had half a mind to argue for my fair share (which should be a lot more than S$2.5k) but didn’t. Probably because I didn’t want any bad feelings, I don’t know. The S$1.6k (for both months) was supposed to have been transferred into my bank account last Thursday, but she only got my account number on Friday. Till today, I still have not seen a single cent for my hard work. If it’s not in my bank account by tomorrow, I’m going down on Friday to have a bitch fit.

Besides that, I still have a part time job. It doesn’t pay much but it’s the least I can do at the moment. I still have not decided if I want to take up a degree course which I’m interested in or to work and get some experience first… I’m so fed up with thinking about it that I’ve stopped. :x That doesn’t please my parents, they want to know what my next step in life would be and I have no answer for them. :/

What about you, do you know what you want to do for the rest of your life? If so, how are you so certain that it’s really what you would stick to for forever?

You should do whatever you feel, and if you get a huge kick in your ass, at least you will learn and start to see everything from another angle.

Right now I know that I want to work in PR or something that has to do with it. I just know that it’s something that I am good in it, and I would do the work with pleasure. And yeah, I did made some mistakes and I’ve learned from them a lot and they made me decide that this is what I want.

I can feel what you’re going through. I do not know what my next step in life is, I know I want to get a degree in the Creative Writing field, and a minor in Forensics Psychology. However, achieving that is the issue for me. I’m jobless, and my grades aren’t up to par for me to transfer. So I get it, when the parents pressure you and want to know an answer. All you can really do is explain to them, that you need time. Life doesn’t work on a schedule, it takes random leaps that can be good or bad. I’ve explained to my aunt that I’m trying, but I can’t guarantee that things will work out the way I or she wants. Just got to live for the moment, and wait to see where the next step leads you.

I agree that that really is completely unfair. At least this time you’ve definitely learned and should probably try to nail down details in teh future. I had a job that was similar… they kind of fudged on the details, I obviously wasn’t being paid enough, etc so since they crewed ME over, I screwed THEM over in return.

I think this a problem most people encounter to be honest; I’m about to graduate with a degree in Public Relations, I’ve kept my options open, but ideally I want to work in Events/Promotions, but with a PR degree you can switch so easily to issues/crisis management, private sector consultation, private firms, public affairs, etc but at the end of the day I think most people are too fickle to stick to one thing.

I always hated the whole ‘What do you want to be when you grown up?’ question, I never had an answer. I don’t want to just be one thing, I want to do lots of things.

I think if you want to do web design for now, then do the course, it’s not going to hurt you, and you can build experience as you go, it’s better than feeling lost, and it gives you a little direction for the time being, and if you find something else along the way then great, at least it’s progress of one kind or another.

      Good luck :)

Yeah those freelance jobs can really get you. I had one too that really got on my nerves. I’m glad it’s over though. It’s good to move on from those. At least you’re still working though. Keep that income cause life is expensive.

You’ll figure it out when it’s time. For some, they’ve got all the answers and everything lined up and planned out. For others, myself included, it just takes alot of trial and error. You’ll get there. Best of luck.

    10. Liesl says:

Well I believe that if you’ve always had a passion for a certain something since you were young, it’ll probably be the best career option for you. Like my sister has always taken an interest in acting and Literature, and she does really well in both.

But then again, not everyone experiences that. Some people are just pretty neutral about everything.

Hmmm… you should pray about it… we humans are forever changing. You may think you want to do something now, and then ten years down the road you may suddenly realise you’ve grown sick of it and decide to do something else.

It’s impossible to know whether you’ll stick to your chosen profession for the rest of your life. I still love what I’ve been doing since I could hold a pencil as much as ever, but even so I can’t be sure. A lot can change in the future.

Everything in this world is so uncertain, so the best thing to do would be to rely on God and ask Him to help you in your decision-making. Because God is constant and He’ll always be by your side, no matter what job you choose to take up. :)

    11. Amber says:

I think Liesl said it well – you can’t know if what you’re doing now is what you’ll want to do the rest of your life. The point to life is CHANGE and if you don’t change, you’re not growing.

      Good luck with everything. :)

    12. Erica says:

Do what feels right. There’s simply no other way for me to put it. You have so many options laid out in front of you it’s just a matter of sifting through them all to find out what the best would be for you to 1) follow your passion and 2) make some cash while you are at it.

      Good luck to you.

    13. Emz says:

All I would really add is to just not rush a decision when you are unsure as to what you do want to do.

You’ll regret it far more if you start a degree course you then realize you don’t actually want to do. As opposed to taking some time to really think about it.

No I don’t know what I want to do for the rest of my life but I hope that it’s something that I want to do and not something that people expect me to do. I sure hope that you get paid and if not I don’t blame you for going back up there and giving a b**ch fit if they don’t.
