The Great Evil That Is Breast CancerNovember 17th, 2008 @ 12:24:15 am
Two months ago, my mother found a lump in her breast. It was a coincidence, praise God, that just a little before that, she’d gotten health insurance. After which she went to a polyclinic for a check up (which would have cost a lot more without insurance). They then gave a referral to a hospital (cheaper with the referral than going straight to the hospital) where they would be able to confirm what the lump really was.
Just a week ago, after numerous tests, it was finally confirmed that she has stage 2 breast cancer. It wasn’t exactly a shock, but it wasn’t an easy news to take as well. There’s always the “Why me?” question, but then again, breast cancer in women isn’t exactly a low statistic. Not to mention, me and my sister will therefore have a higher risk of having it too. Hence, we have all been changing our diets. Not just because of Mum, but also for the sake of being healthier.
Later in the morning, my mother will be undergoing the surgery to remove that offending lump, as well as a reconstructive surgery. All in all, it will be about 6 hours long. I have been praying a lot lately, for the surgery to go well, and for her to have a speedy recovery. I’m hoping that you, my dear readers, would please do the same too. It hasn’t been an easy few weeks for my Mum (and for us to see her upset), so it would mean a lot to me. Thank you. <3
Update #1 [November 19th 2008]: Mum’s surgery went well, today’s the third day since. She’s pretty torn up, though she doesn’t usually show it, but everyone’s been really supportive. Paternal and maternal relatives have been coming to visit her so I hope she feels better. I’m bringing over two small bibles I found in the cupboards for her later; the other bibles we have are way too big. One for her and one for me to read with her to give her more strength and courage. :) For those who don’t pray, please keep her in your thoughts. <3

I’m sorry to hear that your mom is having to go through this. I don’t pray, but I will keep her in my thoughts, and you as well. I have an aunt that got breast cancer, and she had to have surgery and chemo. She lives a relatively healthy life now, and has been for the past 12 years now.

That is terrible news. Like you said though, breast cancer is no small statistic in women these days. :/ My dad’s mother died because of it so I always support breast cancer research charities whenever I can.
I wish all the best for you and your family.

You know, I’ve always been wondering if I have breast cancer too. I don’t know how to determine that though, but I must be wrong too. I wish your mom is doing well. I’m glad that the surgery went well for her.
